  • HOW TO GET AROUND ON METRORAIL

Tall brown columns mark metro stations with a large “M” on each side. Metro lines are color-coded: Blue, Green, Orange, Red, Yellow, and Silver. Not only does the column identify the destination by name, but also the color stripes at the top show which metro lines serve that station. Maps in the stations and inside the trains also help you find your way. You can use the online trip planner at www.wmata.com/schedules/trip-planner/. Be aware that eating and drinking is not allowed on the DC metro. On escalators, make sure to stand on the right and walk on the left.

    FINDING YOUR ROUTE

Check the maps near the SmarTrip machines to determine the line or lines you need. Note the name of the destination (last stop) for the line going in the direction you want to go. Note any stations where you need to transfer. Transfer stations are marked with a double black circle. Your fare depends on when and how far you travel. Fares are posted in all metro stations and buses. The metro runs from 5 am to 12 am, Monday through Thursday, 5 am to 1 am Friday, 7 am to 1 am Saturday and 7 am to 12 am on Sunday. You can also call 202.637.7000 or ask for help at the station.

    PAYING YOUR FARE

For Metrorail, each passenger needs a SmarTrip card purchased from the machine in the Metro station to enter and exit. The SmarTrip card itself costs $2.00, and the minimum starting charge is $8.00. SmarTrip cards are rechargeable cards that you can add money to as you go. You can also buy a 1-day, 3-day or 7-day unlimited pass for respectively $13, $28 and $58, as well as a 7-day short trip unlimited pass for $38 or a 7-day bus pass for $12. The machines accept credit cards, coins, and bills in $1, $5, $10, and $20 denominations.

Fares on weekdays before 9:30 pm: $2.00 minimum, $6.00 maximum. The fare increases by $0.40 per mile of travel after the first three miles.

Fares after 9:30 pm and on weekends: $2.00 flat fare for all rides.

Note that up to two children 4 years and younger, can ride free with each adult paying full fare. Children five and older pay adult fares.

Senior citizens 65 and older, people with disabilities, individuals living in DC, Maryland or Virginia who are enrolled in SNAP and customers with a Medicare card and valid photo ID receive a 50% discount on all rides.

Lastly, please note that the Metro is operating slower than normal and wait times could be longer than expected.
